O Vanira

Vanilla, grown slowly in the shade of Tahiti

Hand-pollinated orchids, sun-cured pods and a family that has tended the same vines for generations.

Nine months on the vine. Months more to cure.

Every flower opens for a single morning, and every one is pollinated by hand. The green pods ripen for most of a year, then sweat, rest and dry in the sun until they turn supple, glossy and almost black.

Nothing is rushed, so the scent is unmistakable: floral, warm and a little like cherries and caramel.

From flower to pod

  • A hand pollinating a Vanilla tahitensis orchid flower with a bamboo stick

    Pollinated by hand

Each orchid opens for a single morning. At dawn we move vine to vine and pollinate every flower with a bamboo sliver.

  • Tahitian vanilla pods drying in the sun on woven mats

    Cured in the sun

The pods sweat in cloth, then dry on woven mats in the Polynesian sun, day after day, until they turn plump, glossy and fragrant.

  • A family recipe card beside open vanilla pods

    Sorted and bundled by hand

We grade every pod by length, gloss and scent, tie them in bundles and pack them the week they are ready.

A family farm, not a factory

O Vanira is a small plantation in French Polynesia. We grow, cure and pack every pod ourselves, so you know exactly where your vanilla comes from and who cared for it.
